The Farmer and the Four Soils

What kind of ground are you?

Jesus sat in a boat and told a crowd on the beach about a farmer scattering seed. Some fell on the path and birds ate it. Some fell on rocky ground, sprang up fast, and withered in the sun. Some fell among thorns and got choked. Some fell on good soil and grew thirty, sixty, a hundred times over. Later his friends asked what it meant, and he told them: the seed is God’s word, and the soils are the people who hear it.

About this story: The Farmer and the Four Soils (Mark 4:1–20)

About 6 minutes: 4 choices and 2 ways-of-knowing stops. Kids play the farmer, then become each kind of ground as a seed lands on them. The point Jesus made isn’t “be good soil or else”; it’s that the farmer throws seed everywhere, generously, and keeps throwing.
